Description of Event:
No matter your treatment population or niche, just about any clinician could be called upon to aid a client with a workers compensation claim for work-related mental health injury. School teachers, nurses, public safety professionals and many more professions are fraught with opportunities for overwhelming stress and exposure to traumas that exceed the coping abilities of the worker. When a client under our care is seeking compensation for mental health injury, our participation becomes a key factor in the processing of their claim. Clinicians often find themselves navigating complex administrative and legal aspects unique to workers' compensation claims with little to no guidance, while simultaneously supporting a client equally overwhelmed with legal jargon and paperwork.
This practical and informative session is designed to equip mental health clinicians with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively and ethically work within the workers’ compensation system. Participants will learn the essential components of the workers’ compensation process, including eligibility criteria, documentation standards, communication with claims adjusters and attorneys, and the role of the clinician in functional recovery and return-to-work planning. Special attention will be given to common diagnoses such as PTSD, depression, and adjustment disorders in the workplace context.
Learning Objectives:
1.Describe the key elements and workflow of the workers’ compensation system, including the greatest areas of emotional stress for the claimant, administrative demands for the provider, and common areas where the process stalls.
2.Identify the clinician's role and ethical responsibilities in treating injured workers, providing documentation, and supporting functional recovery.
3.Apply ethically driven best practices in documentation, report writing, and communication with third parties.
4.Recognize at least three (3) specific psychological challenges associated with occupational injury and recovery.
